Simple Practices to Shift Your Busy Day

The other day I was wrapped up in a to-do list, running from task to task to ‘get things done’ so I could get to the stuff that I enjoy doing. It dawned on me… how much of our life is spent like this? Literally running from point A to point B to some undisclosed future destination. It’s not unusual for people to chase their tails in ‘busyness’ for most of their lives and then wake up wondering how they got to where they are.

The busyness is not going away. But we can do it in a different way.

Mindfulness is not about becoming a great ‘meditator’, someone wrapped up in blissful peace that never gets rattled. Although it is great to have a meditation practice whether it’s sitting, walking or running, it’s about having a better quality of life in the life you are living, right here, right now. Simply because this is where you are. Aren’t you?

I took a quick video of myself to capture how I try to be mindful in the midst of a busy day right here: https://youtu.be/k0eTh2eeo2A

Or if you prefer to read, try these simple ways today to bring an awareness into your day today:

Just Slow Down: This is the hardest thing to do. Walk just a little slower, move a tad slower, drive a bit slower. Try it and see. I challenge you.

Look Up: We tend to look at the sidewalk like we are on a mission to save the world. Look up, at the sky (don’t trip:), look at people, look at buildings. How many times have you passed them without really seeing them?

Engage:  Greet the cashier, the barista, the next person in line. These are humans all around you. Interact with them as fellow humans going about their day. Appreciate the work they do for you. If they are grumpy, appreciate them more.

Breathe at key moments: Before you start your car, waiting in line, before you take that sip of coffee. Use these moments to practice.

Punctuating our life with meaningful moments can change your life, relax your body, and reduce stress. If you have to be busy, why not do it then?

Don’t wait, start today, right now. You are the only one who can do this, no-one and nothing else can bring you peace.

Imagine if everyone did this, what a friendly world it would be. It can only start with us. Have fun doing it!

Enjoy your busyness,

Madeleine
